 <title>Grouping</title>

<description><![CDATA[<p><strong>KS3<br /></strong>In Years 7 and 8, there are 5 groups (per Year Group) which are taught at the same time. In Year 9, there are two year halves (D and M). In all three years pupils are grouped according to their ability. Pupils are firstly banded according to their predicted targets and secondly set within these bands according to their achievement. </p><p><strong>KS4<br /></strong>Pupils are firstly banded according to their predicted targets the bands correspond with the different courses offered (separate sciences, applied GCSE, BTec level 2, core GCSE) and secondly set within these bands according to their achievement. Pupil attendance is also considered when admitting pupils onto a course that requires a high degree of coursework. Pupils usually get either their first or second option choice.</p><p>There are higher and foundation papers available to all candidates.</p>]]></description>

 <title>Assessment for Learning</title>

<description><![CDATA[<p align="left">The Department has embraced Assessment for Learning, and works closely with the Whole School Drive to improve pupil performance at all levels. This takes place through:</p><ul><li><div align="left">Regular, consistent Close the Gap Marking every month.</div></li><li>Effective questioning during lessons</li><li>Regular assessments, with clear close the gap marking, which take place at least every half term.</li></ul><p>The science department operate an assessment for learning cycle that is repeated every half term to ensure pupils are aware of the level they are working at, have a good understanding of the skills required for each level and therefore know how to improve to reach their target. This cycle involves regular peer and self assessment; regular close the gap marking, regular modelling of good answers and regular discussions and verbal feedback.</p><p>Standardised and simplified level and grade descriptors are used&nbsp;and displayed in all classrooms and in all books.</p><p>Pupils at all key stages are assessed regularly, all assessments have been linked to the POS and SOW.</p><p><strong>KS3<br /></strong>Extended writing and free response activities internally marked and moderated. At least 1 per half term. Also summative subject tests at end of each term.</p><p><strong>KS4<br /></strong>Extended writing and free response activities internally marked and moderated. At least 1 per half term and Summative end of topic tests (approximately 3 per module).</p><p>External modular examinations in year 10.</p><p><strong>KS5<br /></strong>Summative end of topic tests (approximately 3 per module).  <title>IOP Physics Video Competition</title>

 <title>Go Green...</title>

<description><![CDATA[The students, staff and governors at Bettws High School feel that it is important to involve our students in decisions that affect the environment in which they live and learn. The Eco Council enables the pupils to formulate proposals, discuss ideas and make decisions about their school. We believe that by giving "ownership" back to students they will appreciate and respect their surroundings.<br />
<br />
We have recently begun work on the "Eco Schools" award, which is a nationally recognised organisation encouraging schools to be more environmentally aware. <br />
<br />
We meet every week to discuss how we can make Bettws High School more environmentally friendly. Pupils from all years and teachers come to our meeting. So far we have discussed environmental issues such as litter, waste management and transport.<br />
<br />
Through all this hard work by all involved we have achieved the Bronze award from Eco Schools and hope to continue the good work by concentrating on improving the school grounds. In the future we hope to achieve the Silver Award and we welcome any new members to the club to help us with this!]]></description>

 <title>Key Stage 4: Year 10 &amp; 11</title>

<b>GCSE Triple Award (AQA)</b><br />
The most academic science qualification, is the "Triple Award" - comprising separate GCSE qualifications in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.  Taught by subject specialists, the Triple Award course is designed for those students seeking a deeper understanding of scientific principals.  Students keen on studying for A-Level Biology, Chemistry and Physics are highly recommended to opt for Triple Award.<br />
<br />
<b>GCSE Core & Additional (AQA)</b><br />
The Core & Additional Science is taught as a blended curriculum, comprising units drawn from Biology, Chemistry & Physics.  It is examined over two years, by a comnination of multiple choice tests and extended answer questions. The practical element is a combination of Investigative Skills Assignments (an externally set, internally assessed test) and a Practical Skills Assessment (a holistic skills assessment) <br />
<br />
<b>GCSE Applied Science</b><br />
A comnination of externally examined and portfolio based assignments, the GCSE Applied Science is a bridge between the Academic and the Vocational sciences.  Over two years, students build up a porfolio of evidence which is examined externally in a more traditional style at the end of Year 11.  Students looking to undertake the BTEC Diploma in years 12 & 13 are recommended to take this Applied Science course as it will provide the essential academic background, with the more practical skills needed.<br />

<b>BTEC First National Diploma</b><br />
A fully vocational course, the BTEC First is 100% portfolio based, with no external examinations.  It is designed to provide a scientific grounding for those students interested in understanding the role of science in the workplace.]]></description>
